With all the scammy, spammy, crappy exercise equipment on the market sometimes it’s difficult to find the ones actually worth spending your hard-earned money on. Today I share my 5 favorite at home exercise equipment that won’t break the bank and will help you to reach your weight loss goals.
There is truly NOTHING I despise more than scammy, spammy, stupid infomercials that push products that make all these FALSE claims for things that they are NOT possibly going to do for you. (Okay, well, maybe there is a few things I despise more) but NOT MANY!
You probably remember the ‘ThighMaster.’ You know, that was the product that Suzanne Somers pushed that you just squeeze your thighs together with this little thing and you are going to lose a bunch of weight. Now, I LOVE Suzanne Somers. She is an AMAZING woman; but that product was…CRAP! You might get toned inner thighs, but that is about it…WITHOUT a GREAT diet and WITHOUT a FULL EXERCISE PLAN on top of that. In addition, I am sure you have seen the ‘SHAKE weight’ (Yeah…there is so many places I could go with that but I have got to keep this PG-rated for everyone and I am not going there.) Ugh!!!
What is unfortunate about this, when I SEE these types of products it just breaks my heart because you have ‘savvy’ marketers that are ‘preying’ upon individuals that are desperate to lose weight. They put these products out there that are really NOT GOING TO live up to the claims that they say they are going to live up to, but yet THEY ARE MAKING MILLIONS of dollars OFF OF YOU AND ME (because I fell prey to that years ago too.) Fortunately, some great at-home exercise products out there are really worth the money. Following, you will be able to find my TOP 5 FAVORITE at-home product recommendations!
#1 AT-HOME PRODUCT RECOMMENDATION – VARIABLE RESISTANCE, RESISTANCE BANDS
Resistance bands are great because they are portable, they are light, you can store them anywhere, and you can get a TOTAL BODY WORKOUT if…you are kind of creative. I oftentimes use these when I travel and I do not have a gym available. Now, you can get resistance bands just about ANYWHERE, BUT my favorite place, of course…is Amazon.com. The ONE THING you want to watch out for is that I do REALLY RECOMMEND the adjustable type, LIKE THE ONES I USE. The ones that I have were super inexpensive…I am pretty sure that they were less than $10 on Amazon.com.
I do recommend the full package, though, the one that comes with the ankle straps and a door strap. The door strap is amazing because you can actually use that as an anchor during your workouts. Also, the variable resistance, resistance bands are fantastic because they have these little clippie thingies so you can take off the various resistance. The ones that I have has like a light, medium, and heavy setting. When you use them for different exercises and as you are getting stronger and stronger, you can use these bands to ramp up your workouts, as you do get stronger and get better at them! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND these if you are on an EXTREME BUDGET or if you need the PORTABILITY, say, if you are traveling or are frequently out of the comfort of your home.
#2 AT-HOME PRODUCT RECOMMENDATION – PORTABLE STEPPING MACHINE
You know, there are just some days that you just do not want to go outside and do cardio. I KNOW I DON’T So portable stepping machines are GREAT. You can pick up one of these for under $50, they are super small and really effective. Whether or not you believe that mini-steppers are effective, they offer an amazing cardio workout that of course accompanies many health benefits. The portable stepping machine may unfortunately NOT be as great as the large steppers, but they are much more affordable… and the convenience is well worth it – I mean, you just cannot leave cardio out of your workout – as much as I would love to leave it out – it does not work that way.
#3 AT-HOME PRODUCT RECOMMENDATION – WORKOUT BAR
Sometimes it is really tough to get a great upper body workout at home without all the accessibility to gym equipment. The workout bar is great for doing chin-ups or pull-ups. BUT, if you think that you cannot do chin-ups or pull-ups, watch my back exercise video, it will show you how you can work up to that. There is nothing better than a great pull-up for an AMAZING back workout, and you can pick up these exercise bars, again, for under about 40 bucks! GREAT piece of equipment to have at home. Below you will find the dialogue of a newscast discussing the Iron Gym Express (IGE) (the at-home workout bar ) and they actually put it to the test by Cindy Ross, whom is a professional trainer. Hey, guys. Well, the equipment is made up of four bars. It is very light and it promises to build some heavy-duty muscle. We put it to the test.

The makers of this ‘As Seen on TV’ exercise equipment say to build a powerful upper body all you need is a door and the Iron Gym Express. That is right! The Iron Gym guarantees to raise the bar on upper body muscles by turning any door into a personal gym in seconds.
Here is how: Its unique design wraps around your doorframe and uses leverage so there is no screws and no damage to your door. ‘Bodies by Cindy’ trainer Cindy Ross says, “Upper body strength is something woman need to work on. Because we do not have the levels of testosterone that men do we do not have the upper body strength. Most women are a lot stronger in their legs.”
Cindy was ready for the challenge. In a matter of seconds, she put the safety clip up, and then placed the Iron Gym over the doorframe.
Start off with shoulder shredding bicep burning chin-ups and pull-ups. (IGE commercial)
Cindy followed suit, but she did use a little stool for assistance. Here is where she felt the burn.
“Back, core, shoulders. It really is an all-over body workout.” Cindy said.
The Iron Gym also shows you that you can switch up your routine by taking it to the floor with push-ups.
Cindy mentioned, “Most women’s wrists, they are weak. Therefore, it is good to be up off the ground.”
Her final test was the deep tricep dips. Cindy’s opinion?
“I do not really like it for dips just because you are not off the ground enough to really get that motion.”
The commercial is enticing, PROMISING that the Iron Gym can get you in serious shape by building rock-hard abs and lean muscle. In addition, Cindy says she felt the burn. In your opinion, is this a deal or a dud?
SURPRISING! Yeah, we have a deal on our hands, and it is substantial. We tested it out there. You know, one thing that Cindy said, due to the fact that women do not have the upper body strength that men do, she said put a little stool–and she did that–underneath the door as well and you can still feel the burn and you can still build the muscle but you will not put as much strain on your muscles. Right. Therefore, she said there are some alternatives. She said it is absolutely a deal.
Not only will it build your upper torso, but it also works your core and your abdomen as well. And, by the way, it will cost you around $20. Not bad. Nice. That is not bad at all.
#4 AT-HOME PRODUCT RECOMMENDATION – WORKOUT GLOVES
Okay, okay, this isn’t really a piece of equipment but it’s SUPER important, ESPECIALLY FOR US WOMEN: workout gloves. Yeah, save your hands, ladies. You DON’T want callouses; you DON’T want the pain. Go ahead and get yourself a cheap pair of workout gloves. I have just simple Gold’s Gym gloves. I think I got them for like 10 bucks. Pick them up—it is WELL worth it. You will be able to lift more weight if you have workout gloves on because your hands are not going to hurt as much and you avoid yucky, painful callouses.
#5… MY LAST…BUT CERTAINLY NOT LEAST AT-HOME PRODUCT RECOMMENDATION – BOWFLEX SELECTTECH ADJUSTABLE DUMBBELL SET
This is the most expensive one out of the group but probably the MOST VALUABLE. Nevertheless, you can get a FULL – and I mean FULL – body workout with this dumbbell set. It is super easy to use. You just turn the dial to adjust the weight, meaning that it will adjust with you as you gain muscle and as you gain strength. You KNOW how I am a proponent of continuing to challenge your body because that is how we build muscle, which eventually BURNS FAT!
Now, these are not as portable as, say, your exercise bands but they certainly take up very little room in your house. Like I said, you can get a FULL BODY WORKOUT. I am a HUGE advocate of this, and while $300 seems like a lot of money, if you think about maybe, a gym membership on the low side can be 30 bucks a month. In less than a year, these things have paid for themselves!
How can you beat that? Therefore, if you cannot make it to a gym, if you live out in the boonies as I did years ago, the SelectTech dumbbell set really is well worth the investment.
